Questioner: Bilal from UK

ANSWER:

There is no problem in grooming one’s hair, provided that it does not result in unveiling or the perpetration of any other sin. This is because this is a permissible form of beautification, in fact the Sharī’ah prefers that a Muslim comb their hair, apply oil, etc. and keep it straight, tidy & well-groomed – it prevents a person from keeping their hair scattered & untidy all over the place.

Just as it is stated in a Hadīth of Muwatta’ Imām Mālik, which Imām Mālik narrates from Sayyidunā ‘Atā’ Ibn Yasār that the Noble Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was situated in a Masjid. A person, whose head and beard hair were scattered, thereby presented himself in his noble court.

“The Noble Messenger of Allāh ﷺ indicated with his blessed hand that this man should be sent out to groom his hair and beard. The man did so and then returned. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, ‘Isn’t this better than one of you coming with disordered & untidy hair, as if he were a devil?’”
