QUESTION:

What do the scholars of the Dīn and muftīs of the Sacred Law state regarding the following issue: If my menstrual cycle finishes at an earlier date than my normal routine, so should I perform Ghusl and pray my salāh or not, and secondly, can I approach my husband after having performed Ghusl or not?

الجواب بعون الملک الوھاب اللھم ھدایۃ الحق والصواب

If your menstrual cycle finished at an earlier than expected time, then you should wait until the end of the Mustahabb time for that particular salāh [during that specific time period]. Then if there is no menstrual bleeding, one should bathe and pray salāh, however intercourse with one’s husband is impermissible at this point in time. When the routine days have passed and there is no bleeding due to menstruation, one may then perform intercourse.

Just as it is stated in Durr Mukhtār & Radd al-Muhtār,

“If a woman’s menstrual cycle finishes earlier than her normal routine, then intercourse is not lawful, although she should perform Ghusl as it is more than likely that her periods may return in accordance to her routine. She should pray salāh after having performed Ghusl i.e. pray salāh towards the end of the recommend time.”

[al-Durr al-Mukhtār & Radd al-Muhtār, vol 1, pg 294]

Furthermore, it is stated in Bahār-e-Sharī’at that if her cycle has ended before her habitual amount of days, then even if she performs Ghusl, intercourse is not permitted until the duration of her habitual cycle ends. For example, if her cycle usually lasts for six days but this time it only lasted for five, then in this case she is to perform Ghusl and start her salāh, but it is wājib [i.e. incumbent] for her to wait one[1] more day before having intercourse.

[Bahār-e-Sharī’at, vol 1, part 2, pg 383]

[1] This condition of one day is not fixed for specifically one. In this example, it is one day because the menstrual cycle completed in five days as compared to the normal routine of six, hence there being a one day difference, which is the reason of waiting for one day. This amount of days could be more than one also, for instance, if the menstrual cycle completed in seven days but the routine being nine, hence there being a difference of two days, therefore the time of waiting to have intercourse being two days.
