[Q-ID0282] Should we use عليه السلام (alaihis salaam) for other than a Prophet?

QUESTION:

What do the scholars and muftis of the mighty Shar’ah say regarding this matter: should we say Mariam (alayhis salaam) or Mariam (radi Allahu anha)?

ANSWER:

There is a difference of opinion regarding the use of عليه السلام after those who are not Prophets or Angels. Some of the early ulama like Qādi Iyād (رحمه الله) have argued it should be exclusive to them alone as mentioned by Sayyid ibn Abidīn al-Shāmī (رحمه الله) in Radd ul-Muhtār.

Its use after the names of the Ahlul Bayt has became a sign of the shiah sect who do so whilst falsely affirming infallibility for them thus the ulama have said saying ‘ Sayyidunā Alī عليه السلام ‘ would be disliked as it would also involve resemblance to the people of innovation as mentioned in Sharh Fiqh al-Akbar. Taking this in to account to maintain a distinction in how we mention Prophets and Angels we should use

رضي الله عنها

for the blessed Lady Maryam رضي الله عنها.
